University of Manchester
The University of Manchester understand that big problems can grow from small throw-away comments. We worked with them to create a website and suite of videos that highlight how the things we say, or the way we act can adversely affect other people.
When the Universities UK Taskforce released a report recommending that all universities should create systems for reporting harassment and bullying, the University of Manchester took the lead. As UoM (we’re on acronym-terms with them) already had a good infrastructure for handling reports, they asked Trust to use our branding and digital expertise to create an anonymous online reporting platform.
With an increasingly diverse campus population, the University needed something that would meet the needs of a large number of different people. So they needed a user experience that would resonate with students, lecturers, and the wider campus team, and ensure that it was easy to use at what will be a difficult time.
Every user is different, and therefore we knew that each individual would want to use a system like this in different ways. Some would want anonymity, others would want to be direct. Some would want to report on specific incidents, others would want support or guidance on how to deal with a particular situation.
This posed one of our most challenging UX briefs. Of course the platform had to relay reports about bullying and harassment - but it also has to be simple, engaging and intuitive. Report & Support is an effective solution to an important initiative. Now, not only do UoM now have a platform that sets them apart from their peers, but one that actually resonates with the individual needs of all of their users.
At its heart Report & Support is a digital platform that allows users to do two things, first to make a report (anonymously if they wanted) and secondly to gain access to a database covering everything from hate crime to sexual assault. We worked really hard to keep the design big, bold and clean, creating a UX experience that was simple and straightforward.
The core principle behind the online ‘Report & Support,’ system was that users would be able to be able to use it in whatever way they needed. So it was absolutely vital that Report & Support was bulletproof when it came to handheld devices.
