Retrak's vision is that 'no child is forced to live on the street'. They aim to achieve this vision by eradicating poverty in all of its forms. Our challenge was to build a website that would showcase their amazing work and research, while encouraging donations from large corporate organisations and the public.
Retrak is a local Stockport charity with a global reach. Based in Cheadle, their revolutionary approach to helping the world’s street children has seen their research used by everyone from UNICEF to the White House. Proud, principled and passionate, their vision is to create a world in which, “No child is forced to live on the street.” This means they work closely with governments to not only to take vulnerable children off the streets, but actually address the social problems – alcoholism, AIDS, domestic violence – that put them there in the first place.
As with all charities, Retrak’s main issue is funding. And not just any funding, they need the Comic Relief-level and corporate-sized donations that would enable them to effect change on a global scale. When they came to us, their old HTML website simply wasn’t doing that job. In fact it was actually restricting their ability to reach the organisations that they needed engage with. Not only was their site non-responsive, the CMS was still managed by Retrak’s old (and defunct) agency, meaning they couldn’t even update their own site content.
We started by doing our homework. We hosted worldwide Skype calls with all the key stakeholders in the charity. We knew we had to understand what people in the field needed from a website just as much as the UK based team. The message came back loud and clear: ‘data exchange.’ People in the field needed quick and easy access to the huge archive of reports and documentation the charity had compiled over the years, while the fundraisers needed as much data and information on the people that were landing on the site, so they could be properly targeted in fundraising campaigns.
The result was a responsive website that brought everything into one place, streamlining the fundraising and donations process as well as creating a ‘Resources’ section where users could download Retrak’s reports. We added e.commerce functionality (no mean feat, thanks to all the different currencies a global charity has to work with) and created a literature database that now hosts every single article and report – including those from before our involvement – the charity has ever produced.
There were also nice creative flourishes we were able to add in, such as representing suggested donations not as mere numbers, but as something tangible. Users were not donating “$50,” they were donating a “year’s school fees,” which humanised things in a way that aligned with the charity’s brand values. The site was a great foundation for our relationship with the charity, and we now provide ongoing support, assisting with everything from the design, creation and execution of high-level accounts reports, through to the making a suite of live graphics for use in an international charity event hosted in Brazil.
“A huge thank you for the phenomenal amount of time, work and energy you put into our new website. It looks superb and communicates who we are exceptionally well.”Steve Thomas
